crawling into a long weekend

By | February 14, 2021

Felt a little under the weather for the beginning of the week. Nothing worrisome, just winter bug so kind of went by feel until I felt better, which I very much do now. I also realized that like with homework, running goes better on a deadline: 9a dentist appointment, get out the door; snow tomorrow? I’ll run tonight. Without that? ehh I’ll linger until it’s warmer, or maybe run tomorrow. I continue to not use the snow as a reason not to run, which I’m really proud of myself about, and was a little better about getting outside every day.

Words of wisdom from Peloton’s Matty Maggiacomo: inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit. I am shocked I’ve made it through two weeks of enCORE28. Not because I can’t (although my abs currently hate me, even with some modifications), but because I’ve never been consistent in strength training even with Marcia’s amazing videos. It’s also been a gateway into finding other Peloton workouts. Regardless of whether I finish the challenge, I’m going to call that a goal met.

I’ve said this a few times over quarantime, but the anniversary of the Cozy author talk on the eve of the 11-month work from home day, it hit home. I cannot fathom getting through this year without running as an outlet and without all of you. xx

OK, the snow-grinch might be coming around

This was from last Sunday’s gorgeous walk through the Park as it was snowing. Sometimes walk pace is much more fun, and hard to get any more gorgeous.

Weekly Run Down with Kim and Deborah:

  • I missed a Monday: I woke up with a slightly dodgy stomach from eating too much/too late during the Super Bowl. That, coupled with it being 17 / wind chill 8 and a sore glute / hip from how I slept led to a (wise) decision to go back to sleep. Stomach was fine by lunch and I got in a quick walk after work when it was a balmy 20. Missing this Monday for the second week in a row really threw off my running routine though. Such a creature of habit.

dental goodies

  • Tuesday? Mattysday! I had a dentist appointment that I ran to and from with Matty Maggiacomo’s Lady Gaga & Hamilton runs. The streets were luckily plowed and it’s hard to be unhappy with good music. Still was swearing at him with an evil evil enCORE28 class. When the hygeinist checked my files we realized it was one day off my 11 year anniversary so I asked for a “bonus”. Really I just wanted another travel tooth paste, but I came away with a nice haul. Haven’t bought toothbrushes since I started going to him, and always nice to have back up floss for times like last spring when floss picks could not be found.

is ice sledding a sport?

  • Wacky Wednesday: I wasn’t going to run two days in a row, and then I saw the forecast for snow overnight and knew Thursday morning would be too slick. Short on time, I decided to run the river, which I hadn’t since the snow started. This is pretty much why. Wasn’t so much a run as a penguin waddle with spurts of running where it was clear. It was really about getting outside after a long screen heavy day, and it was great.

good morning world

  • Thursday: something about falling snow that gets me out the door. We just got a dusting and it made for a nice 2-3 mile walk to start the day off right.

always my happy place

  • Friday: I was torn on this run. Skipping it would mean twice in one week having two days between runs, but doing it would make getting back on Monday, Weds, Thurs, Saturday routine harder.  I know having two days off between runs doesn’t matter, but I am a creature of habit and love this routine I’ve gotten into for consistency. It’s also one of the few things I can control in this year. I ended up getting out for a few miles ending in my happy place, which was where I was reflecting on running being “Cozy”.  I so love winter running. As always, once I got out I was so happy I did.

Polar bears or dogs?

  • Saturday: about that deadline thing. I was “going any minute” for a run all morning and early afternoon. Suddenly at 3 it was a scramble because I needed to: drop off laundry, get a return label printed, and drop off the package at the post office before the latter closed at four. I wasn’t sure I wanted to run and said I’d at least run to the post office and back. I was so sure I wasn’t running any distance that I didn’t even take water. I’m pretty sure the dip into CVS for water once the fresh air invigorated me was responsible for my Garmin deciding to kiss a building a few avenues east. Ended up somewhere around seven using all my stabilizing muscles on the reservoir and bridle path. Way more fun than paved roads! While it’s much warmer here than those of you in the midwest, it’s still nippy. Mask upside? Face gets less cold.

  • Sunday: I think I see the sun! Going for a walk.

Matty’s run are always a good time! I just really love his personality. I’m not doing his enCORE28 challenge but many people I know are doing it and they have all mentioned how hard some of the classes/moves are. By looking at his abs, he definitely knows what he’s doing, lol.

His 80s runs are growing on me, especially on overcast days. I think I’d have enjoyed Gaga more if I were a bigger fan of hers. I’ll do his Madonna for sure.
There are days the core classes are manageable. And then there are others where I can’t lift my legs. Doing it warmed up seems to help on some days. I’d take his abs for sure!

No sun here today, but no wind is even better! Sorry about the stomach; glad it resolved quickly.

There definitely is something calming about walking in Winter — when I can get myself out there, which usually happens due to Bandit.

I actually got myself out for my run today 30 minutes EARLIER then planned. I’ve adopted the mindset “another 30 minutes, or hour, isn’t really going to make a difference). Sometimes it works. 🙂

NIcely done! When there’s wind it makes the biggest difference to wait for the sun I’ve found. When it isn’t, or when it’s overcast, it generally is mind over matter.
Thanks! I know better than to eat spicy late. Or I should anyway

You snapped some great photos this week! matty is fantastic at motivating and I bet you will see a huge difference after doing the 28 days of core. I know I do! Peloton does suck you in-in a good way! Have a great week of runs and crunches 🙂

Yes, I’m so glad I finally decided to try it. I’m looking forward to re-doing his 28 at some point to see which I am better at. Need to do upper body first as that’s a huge hamper for me

The sun is out but it is COLD here! I did get outside because it’s pretty, I have the gear, and when it starts to melt, there’s going to be a lot of ice. Glad you are feeling better and that you got out and enjoyed the snow!

Your pictures are beautiful!!! They actually make the snow look beautiful. And I think “Superbowl Monday” should be an official day off. : )

aww, I love the snow bears! your pictures look lovely. NYC looks so nice in the snow!

Snow isn’t my excuse these days, -30 windchill is, ha! I would love a 30 degree snowy run right now!

Great week Cari, you accomplished a lot!

      Thank you!
I chuckled at I think it was your Strava where you said the cold snap/pandemic might make you need another treadmill. I couldn’t so blissfully run outside if we had a true winter. Grateful for the warming impact of the river.

Great job with your consistency! I’m shaking my head at myself, how I’ve accumulated six consecutive ‘mill runs…they haven’t been terrible, but definitely not as enjoyable as if outdoors. We do what we gotta do, right? I can’t remember the last time we bought toothbrushes, either LOL

      I love Mattys playlists.

Running in fresh snow us special.

But I have to say I love my ocean views. I may not come home lol.

Have I mentioned how much I love your photos of NYC, especially Central Park?

There’s been a lot of cursing at Matty but I am enjoying the core challenge – can’t believe we’re already at the halfway point!

Great job getting out there despite the weather!

Thank you! I can’t wait for it to be safe for you to come down and visit. Central Park is always gorgeous, as you well know, but there’s something about the snow.
      We’re going to beat Matty!

Running is the best Valentine, and those are absolutely polar bears.

I get so nostalgic lookin gat your photos. I miss the city so much, and wish I could take the family for a visit. It’s been so long since we’ve traveled, and I miss it in my soul 🙁

Deadlines definitely help with running! As much as I don’t like having to do my workouts so early, in a way its good that I’ve learned to just get up and get them done. And the weather has forced me to move things around as well.

Was the Super Bowl last Sunday? Seriously, you take the best NYC photos! I love every single one. We’ve had some sun here on some days but they’ve been cold. I need it to be in the 40s-50s so all of the snow could melt.

I love your snowy photos, although I don’t envy that icy run. I get so frustrated with runs like that. Matty does have hard core classes — and doesn’t take many breaks. I got hooked on daily core in the spring and am still going. For me, it’s a good way to wake up and warm up.

Hope you’re back to feeling 100% by now. I’m just like you. I get things done more efficiently when I have a deadline. I think a lot of us are like that, though.

You really had some pretty runs/walks last week. I loved seeing your pictures of the beautiful winter scenes.

I am loving your stunning winter pics. I’d say those are polar bears. SO cute. As much as I love winter and a good dump of snow, I have to say I’m loving the warm breezes of Florida more. As soon as we get our youngest off to college I want to make this snowbird thing a regular occurrence. Glad you’re feeling better!

We had similar weather last week and I would have loved to run in it but had to decide for caution for the knee. I am too nervous that something is going to happen again and I *need* running in my life (instead of no running and PT).

Ice sledding is indeed a sport. Just ask the Dutch. Literally everyone was out last week sledding, snowboarding (!!) and skiing even, in our park. Lots of ice skating and ice baths too. Nuts.

Wow, someone has some artistic skills on that polar bear creation! Good job on those icy runs. Your area looks very beautiful covered in snow. I do love getting all the goodies at the dentist!

Yes, the polar bear and a cracken last week. I find their talents amazing and get a little mad at mother nature for melting them. The polar bears this week were a snow lump
