Running into October

By | October 2, 2022

Before I get to the rundown, I would be remiss in not talking about the down side of running. A woman runner attacked at knife point in broad daylight and in the course of the investigation it turned out he was likely tied to other assaults on walkers and runners in the park that hadn’t been covered in the news. It sounds as if she’ll be physically OK and the man has been arrested, but this is frightening. Disturbing. Pick your adjective. What I loved though was the running community coming together and making sure people weren’t solo. Luckily at about peak NYC / Marine Corps mileage, this wasn’t a huge issue in Central Park, but it’s sad to think that we can’t just go run.

Running wise, this was otherwise a good week. I finished Week 3 of the Team Wilpers Challenge and while it’s not explicitly focused on my 15K, I’m using it as training for that race because I need some structure in the build back. So far it has been excellent, and fun.

I need to look back at my September mileage as I haven’t been great with the spreadsheet. Oops. I can’t believe it’s already October.

Linking up with Kim and Deborah (and good luck to you and Darlene in the Portland Half!) for the Weekly Run Down:

Cat Hill Repeats

  • never miss a Monday: coming off the news of the assaulted runner, this hill workout was a challenge. Not physically (although duh, yes!), but logistically because at 90 second uphills, I couldn’t use the East River promenade where I (generally) feel safe. I sorted out a way to run commute home with a light bag and headed for Central Park where I knew there would be many many runners. Cat Hill was just about long enough for these repeats. While I’m in no way in shape, it will be fun to compare if I do them again, and it will help for the 15K since we see this hill. Also, I need to quit detouring around Cat Hill.
  • Tuesday: worked from home, but had dinner with friends in midtown so beautiful fall evening walk through Central Park.

I love this dress. I still can’t take a mirror selfie for my life

  • Wednesday: supposed to be 45m with strides, but I could not get going. I think I was still unsettled by the weekend’s news. I settled on a run commute knowing I couldn’t run after work due to the Chocolate Factory Theatre gala (zoom in on pic 3 and play Where’s Cari!) and punted on the workout. They’d advised us that the dress code was industrial garden party (check!) and that the floor was uneven. I wanted to wear boots, but they don’t work with this dress so my woven pseudo Mary Janes it was. The host had on Wonder Woman Converse and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want a pair. Any dress code with sneakers? AOK in my book. Late night, but a fun one as I heard the call of Aaron Judge’s 61st home run in a Lyft home. Jordan bought Thursday’s newspaper and then Mom found this in dad’s box. Lesson learned: don’t throw anything out.

happy 15th to me

  • Thursday: gorgeous sunset skies ahead of Ian, and return of the Office Run Group leaving from the office! I’m usually better at lunch fueling when I’m running after work, but how do you say no to the Dolly Varden Yard Bird and some rose when we went out to celebrate my 15th work anniversary. I love what I do and who I work with, but being somewhere 15 years when I still feel like the kid who started at 27?  Insane! Because I subsequently ran home from the run group’s office end point, I called this the Saturday 60m workout for the Team Wilpers Challenge. We were projected to get the rain from Ian so that worked out well.
  • Friday: off day from exercise.

Hi Fred

  • Saturday: watch and wait with the Ian rain. After some procrastinating, which involved costume planning for a Halloween race, I got in a date with Fred and the 45m with strides workout, which is one of my favorites in the challenge. Nice to find some speed at the end of the workout. With the cool down, this also ended up being about an hour, so was glad to get all the workouts in despite some fits and starts earlier in the week. Balancing life and running is key.
  • Sunday: wet Giants game with a friend.

Hope you have fun at the game today! I can’t believe how bad my Commanders and Hokies are this year. 🙁

So cool about Aaron Judge’s 61st home run. My mom has old newspaper clippings from events like your dad kept. In fact, my dad had a drawer full of old baseball magazines from the 50’s that a friend had given him. I’m sure there’s lots of interesting articles in those old magazines.

my Irish aren’t much better, so I feel you on that. We need to find a blogger in Texas to have the complete NFC East set.
Those souvenir articles are so much fun, especially for the ads

What? I hadn’t heard about this latest attack. Crazy that these things are happening in broad daylight. I’m glad the woman is okay and they guy has been arrested. Yes, NYC has an amazing running community- you’ve got a lot of company. Still I can see why it’s unsettling.
Nice job on those workouts! And I love that dress. And, happy 15th! It’s nice to have a job you love.

I really do love what I do. Was saying that to colleague who is on the eve of her 25th. The variety is what makes it interesting and special.
And yes, should not be a thing we have to worry about

      Thank you!
And yes, so sad. And frustrating. This shouldn’t be a thing. It’s like the school shootings though, if there isn’t a fatality (thankfully), it’s not even on the news for longer than one cycle.

I hadn’t heard about that attack either! There’s just so much bad news these days, i guess Ian overshadowed all of that. Stay safe!

I’ve been seeing a lot of women wearing sneakers with dresses–even at weddings and the kids at HOCO. I think you could do it!

Watching your giants annihilate my Bears as we speak. Man, the Bears suck.

      Frightening all around.
I am all for that new? trend, although I absolutely did sneakers one year due to my bad knee senior year. I had surgery a few days after graduation.
That game. No QBs between the two teams.

Our oldest set a trend (back in her HS days) with wearing Converse with formal dresses (but not for prom, LOL). She’s tall (5’11) and didn’t want to tower over everyone else, and thought the Converse made a funky fashion statement. Congrats on 15 years! I just had my 16th anniversary recently….definitely my longest working gig 😉

Happy sweet 16! Aren’t we lucky?
I love your daughter’s idea. 5’2 and 5’11 can both rock that trend. If I’d seen the host’s pre-dinenr video before work I might have worn one of my crazy Ghosts

Not that the injury is funny, but I giggled at the phrasing. Thanks so much for teling us about these. Thank you! MAcy’s this spring when I realized I had a bunch of evening events. What I love the most is sleeves are sheer so it’s functionally sleeveless, but no need for a shawl. Best of both worlds

I did not hear about the incident in CP either. How scary. I don’t know what the answer is anymore.
Congrats on the 15-year workiversary! That’s so great! I don’t think I’ve worked anywhere longer than 5 or 6 years. Haha! Have fun planning that run costume!

How does one come back from an attack? Ugh. My niece is taking up running. I don’t remember if she lives in Harlem or teaches in Harlem or both. She needs to get fitted for shoes & I was pushing her to join a running club. She is slow, which is kind of surprising, but that may just because she’s new to it. Anyway.

In a sense where I live is just small enough that I feel ok running on my own, although there are also places I won’t run alone and bad things do happen everywhere.

Congrats on 15 years! Loving your job is SO important. I never worked anywhere that long, LOL, moving around with my husband and changing careers a few times then retiring early. I hope that you begin to feel more relaxed running solo again soon.

Ugh, I hadn’t heard that the person is suspected in other attacks. ~sigh~

Congrats on your workaversary – those flowers are lovely!

Looks like Ian is still lingering over both of us.

The attack on the runner in broad daylight is still freaking me out. I know that these things can happen anywhere but it seems like NYC is having a bigger issue with crime now vs years pass. Hopefully things will get better soon. Just a shame that we as women have to be on such high alert all the time 🙁

Congrats on 15 years at your work anniversary! Loving what you do is so important since we spend so much of our lives at work.

These assaults need to stop. Seriously. I’m over it. But I am glad you are safe and the community continues to show up for each other.

You looked gorgeous at your event – sneakers with nice dresses are so in. All the girls here wear sneakers with their formal dresses and it’s just so perfect.

That attack is very scary. I rarely think twice when running alone but try to run in daylight and safe places (is any place safe?)

You clean up well LOL. That dress looks amazing.

    So what is your costume?

    See you soon!!!!!!!!!
I have a hilly 15k coming up. I should probably run up some CP hills….

I’m so behind I’ve had to ditch all the other running updates, but can’t miss yours! I am still so sorry about the assault, it’s so unsettling, but I’m glad the running community has come together. I’ve had some lovely chaps accompany me home from club run recently when my usual friends haven’t been there (I do ask people who live in my direction) and we have to hold on to that kindness. Love the dress, and want to hear about this halloween run costume!
