Shoefessions 2025

I was beginning to think I wasn’t going to find a solution in ASICS

Dear self, please listen to your 2017 self.

Linking up with Deborah and Kim for a State of the Shoe.

the seven seconds it wasn’t raining, from a post that never made it

When Jenny and I met up in January, we were talking about how we’re all sore if not actually injured. A huge part of why this “training cycle” has sucked is my feet have been displeased with the situation and making that displeasure known. I’ve been back in ASICS for about 16 months but if I’m being honest with myself it was probably at the year mark that I knew they weren’t working. Amusingly? It’s yet another PF flare meets outside of foot pain.

In November after running two races in No Bull demos, but realizing they weren’t the shoe for me, I gave the Launch a go and realized I had no pain! Shades of my post above and what I remember about my first Ghosts. Did it pull the mental trigger? Of course not. I’ve run in and whined about the ASICS since even realizing the 31s were better than the purple 30s (rude!) but really not enjoying the runs. A sciatica flare didn’t help on that, to be fair.

hello old new friends

Venus!

Harlem Hills (I walked)

Finally after an honest conversation with my PT about Vegas we tried Hoka (no. They came with added shin splints), and then she blessed my trying what we know works, my beloved Brooks Ghosts. Thanks to the magic of a professional ordering them, they arrived in two days and I got to wear them on two runs. One was a walk run because Planets! and Sunday’s was a nearly pain free walk/run long run. 10.5 and I could have run longer if the snow melt wasn’t re-freezing with the sun going down.

There’s probably a way to manage the Achilles in them, and neither of us is sure it had actually stopped in the ASICS so much as been eclipsed by the foot pain.

So, I guess I’m officially running Vegas. I probably would have anyway, because I’m stubborn like that and the cutoff is such that I could have walked it, but it’s good to know I should be able to do it relatively pain free.

Now would someone please yell at me if I stray from Brooks again?

I will! No, I could never yell at you. But I have a few pairs of Brooks that I love–the Launches are one of them. I also love the Glycerins and the Glycerin Max. So comfy. The Ghosts are so reliable. And don’t even get me started on my Cascadias–my beloved trail shoes…So many shoes, so little time. I hope the PF/pain/whatever it is- resolves quickly.

What race are you running in Vegas?

It’s REALLY hard to only have one shoe that fits well. For me, it’s also Brooks (although the Adrenalines, not the Ghosts).

That said, I’m glad you found something that works for you and that feels great!

I feel for you on the foot issue.

And I’m maybe more stubborn that you.. but it’s close.

Enjoy Vegas… how can you not? The lights, the strip and hiking in Red Rock canyon.

But I hope you are pain-free.

I do recollect you mentioning that you were going to try ASICS again. The Ghosts are just so reliable and easy to.wear for most runners. I alternate between those and Glycerin. Hope your feet are happy and ready to enjoy Vegas xoxo

Well, I can hold you to the Brooks Ghost unless/until they change them. I was a Mizuno girl for years until they decided to make “narrow” their calling card. I hope this pair works for you and serves you well in Vegas — we can bet on it! 😉

I like Asics but I can’t wear them for more than about 4 miles at a time until they’ve done 100 miles. I love my Sauconys and I think my achilles is from walking around shoes, not running shoes, although who really knows. Hooray for Vegas, though!
