Spring in my step

By | March 20, 2022

Yes, I think this might actually be spring, not false spring, second wintering, etc.

Mother Nature seems to think so as everything is blooming even after last weekend’s deep freeze. Even as someone allergic to all the things that bloom, I love all the spring colors.

It was a good, albeit busy, week. If you missed it, my Half recap is finally up.

Linking up with Deborah (yay awesome Half marathon finish!) and Kim:

  • Sunday: I was supposed to run 10, which has turned into 9 a few times. As I waited for it to warm up, I was determined that wouldn’t happen again and began to plot some routes since I did not want to do loops in Central Park. With MLB lockout having lifted and Opening Day around the corner, there was really only one option I seriously considered. It was time to go to the Polo Grounds. It’s the perfect half marathon training run at 9.5 ish depending on route, and while I’m too young to know those Giants, I LOVED dad’s stories. Well, no leaves on the trees and I get a peekaboo view of Yankee Stadium and well, I knew this wouldn’t be an out and back. Detours over Macombs Dam to Yankee Stadium and up Frederick Douglass to Polo Grounds home plate marker and I arrived home at ~ 12.5. Fittingly to close out Kim’s #WeekOfPi, that was also 4Pi.   There was some walking, but this was a confidence builder heading into crunch time for the 10M and Brooklyn Half.
  • never miss a Monday: office day due to an in person meeting that got cancelled halfway into my commute. I decided to stick with the plan and was treated to a beautiful sunset on my walk home. Despite ~2.5 mile walks each way I was super stiff after a desk day.
  • Tuesday: shakeout run to test the ITB, hips, quads. All the things felt mostly good. Capped the day with an afternoon “meeting” in Central Park when my wi fi went down without enough time to go into the office. Love that there’s wifi near the Delacorte when it’s needed.

El Greco St. Jerome

  • Wednesday: museum-ing! I love the Frick Madison. In their temporary home in the Breuer building, the art isn’t fighting with the architecture to be seen. I fell in love with El Greco’s work when I was a sixteen year old in Spain and on this one day, the Frick allowed photos. We were there to see their new temporary installation, but someone was hanging with the old masters. They have a room dedicated to Rembrandt! <3

so foggy. So true

  • Thursday: return of the office run group after a few weeks of schedule conflicts. Lovely to run in a skirt and long sleeves, but the misting fog was legit. My newish Aftershokz aren’t the headband the old Blues were, but the glasses make a good one since I couldn’t see through them anyway. This run was solid.
  • Friday: really trying to keep the easy days easy to whack the ITB into submission. Delicious after work walk chasing cherry blossoms and some quality people watching on the great lawn. Spring in the city is the absolute best.

Rubem Robierb, Dream Machine II

  • Saturday: all the things are blooming and my allergies are flaring, so if I had to describe a pace for this run I would call it sneeze. It wasn’t a great run, although it was gorgeous out. Was just shy of 8 and debating pushing for 9 when I landed weird and felt a pain in the back of my right foot. Decision made. I walked home and it mostly felt fine, subsequent walk to and from dinner was pain free. I think it was my body reinforcing the decision the brain was leaning towards. 8 is fine and there’s no need to chase perfection.
  • Sunday: spectating the NYC Half on this beautiful day.

Spring Fling next weekend with some friends. Two weeks out from Cherry Blossom and five weeks from the new Brooklyn Half. It’s going to be a great spring!

    Boo on allergies.

Hooray for signs of spring and museums!!

Still quite brown here but the snow is almost gone.

Your races are becoming more numerous.. or is that just me?

A little of both. Everything is crammed into spring and I have nothing else on the calendar, although I know I’ll run Pride. Mix of new races and old favorites, which is a nice problem to have.

Sounds like you have an exciting Spring lined up, Cari! Glad that the foot pain was nothing big. I think I missed your half recap — a bit behind on reading & commenting — I’ll have to try to remember to go look later.

That is really too bad about the canceled meeting while you were on the way there!

So sorry the spring allergies are staging a return. I had forgotten how much those were a nemesis for me until my allergy shots rectified most of my allergy issues year-round. Ahhh, yes! It does feel like Spring in Iowa, too. I hada to restrain myself from doing a happy dance during my recovery run earlier.

I’m calling it spring since I am having allergy symptoms. Actually, I’m fine with false spring and the like because the warmer weather is great–even if we have to endure cold days in between. It’s coming and I’m here for it.

So glad to see you having some strong runs Cari!

I’m so allergic at the moment!

Did you see someone in my running club top in the Half? One of my clubmates did it, but I didn’t know she was planning to…

Well, I’m loving all the posts about spring. As you can imagine, “spring” isn’t really a thing down here- but I definitely remember how awesome it is from my days up north (sorry about the allergies, though!)
Sounds like you’ll be in great shape for your upcoming races-congrats on the 4pi run!

What a great week! All the signs of spring are wonderful. My husband is going to be in NYC next week for work (he used to go about once a month, but hasn’t been in over two years of course!); I’ll tell him to keep an eye out for you in Central Park 🙂

I missed your race recap and will read it now!

I am going to try to hit up some of our smaller museums and gallleries this summer. I dont’t love going alone, but what can you do.

Mr PugRunner and my stepdad are both so excited for baseball. I’m over here just trying to get to a Macon bacon vs Savannah Bananas game.

It definitely seems springlike and things are starting to bloom. Hoping all the Cherry blossoms are still here when the race rolls in. Can’t wait to see you soon!

You are running strong my friend! Sorry about the allergies but I do love that things are blooming there. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer here. How fun to visit the Frick!

Great week! I have been enjoying your photos of all things in bloom – sorry it comes with allergy challenges. No blooms here yet, but the weather’s cooperating so I’m hopeful.

I think the flowers were super confused between last weekend and today. Do we bloom or not bloom? lol

Love that you were able to spectate the NYC Half and run into Erica as well. Always nice to meet up with running friends in real life 🙂

Yay for a spring with races, Cari! How long will your Cherry Blossom race be?

I love the term “quality people watching”. I love watching people while I’m running on the busy promenade in Cape Town. Some of the scenes are quite hilarious. The best one was when a guy proposed to his fiancée while she landed with a paraglider on the lawn. 🙂

Sneeze pace, that’s hilarious! Everything here has popped in the last two days. It’s going to be so pretty for the next week; however, we’ll be in Florida for the week and just might miss all of the blooms.
