15 Years. 15K

Accurate

Although with the heat this week, there wasn’t always the energy to run the 10K either.

Those mornings when I set the alarm for a time I didn’t know existed to go out for a run helped me through some of the toughest tests of my life.

Words of wisdom though from a book I read over the weekend. I’m fine, but running is such a good think space.

And thank you to so many of you who checked in on Dad’s anniversary. Running friends are the best. xx

Linking up with Deborah and Kim for the weekly run down:

hi Fred!

  • rewinding to Sunday, the 10K on Governors Island, if you missed it followed by sushi and a wonderful fireworks nightcap.
  • never miss a Monday: wasn’t going to run since the race was Sunday but did I want to: get back on track, not miss a Monday, get a run in before Mother Nature turned on the furnace again? Yes. I also needed to return a purchase to GAP Factory store and chose the one that was ~ 3 miles away figuring I’d run there and take the bus back. It wasn’t as hot as I feared, so I ended up run/walking home with some stops to refill the water and take pictures.
  • Tuesday: Bob had his replacement knee replacement so off other than keeping mom company while he was in surgery (all good, home now and feeling good).

Goodnight Moon

    • Wednesday: runrise, mooonset. I got out early enough to knock out ~ five miles. Writing this Sunday night, I have no recollection. I didn’t melt, clearly and looking at instagram, it was a pretty, muted runrise. After work I was able to visit Bob before meeting some friends for birthday drinks at Little Island.

permission slip for an off day?

    • Thursday: I was going to run, and then I wasn’t, and then I did. The subways were badly flooded and I decided it was the easiest way home from a work event in Times Square, so a 5K puddle hop. Luckily my neighborhood was spared and no one I know had major damage. Frightening to see the coverage though.
    • Friday: escaped to Mom & Bob’s for the weekend. We walked into town after getting Bob settled but otherwise off.
  • a deer on my run!

    chasing history

    • Saturday July 10 marked fifteen years that Dad is gone. I’m not sure how the hell it’s been that long, but in some ways the day was easier than I feared. I was floored to see the deer (and sad Mr. Motorized scared him off) and two bunnies on my run, rarities even at mom’s. I didn’t plan to do a 15K in his honor, but I was absolutely determined to find the route from the trail down to the pier. The weather was relatively mild and it was overcast, so it was now or never. The trail connection was a little further, the pier a little longer and as I was on the last mile back to mom’s and thinking about dad, I realized that I was going to cross nine miles, and 15K it was. I actually ended up coming in about 9.5 which left me a little sore. Luckily nothing besides finding some historical markers – dad’s true religion – a nap, and ice cream for dinner. It was so good to be home this weekend. Is this the start of half marathon training? Who knows. Maybe?
    • Sunday: couple walks  between rain drops.  Nice active rest day after some slug ones. Felt good to be moving and with such nice weather, I couldn’t not.

A 15K to honor your father was nice tribute, even if it wasn’t intentional 😉 I’m glad to hear Bob is doing well, too. Sounds like rain has been a consistent theme for many of us. We didn’t get nearly as much as was forecast…but Momma N kept me guessing (almost daily) as to what was really going to happen. Yesterday was a total weather-stalker kind of day in anticipating my evening run…

and the ever changing/guessing continued today. According to the app, it was a wash out. The clouds keep blowing in and out and while I smelled some summer rain, I haven’t seen any. I’m sure it will start as soon as I begin the errands

I’m glad you did that 15K and I learnt so much on your Facebook Timeline about your dad’s love for historical markers. Also happy that Bob is already feeling good and hoping his recovery is smooth.

Running really IS such a good think space. I always re-discover that on my toughest days.

I said to a friend that we might not solve the world’s problems on a run, but I usually feel better about them.
You’d have loved dad. He’d have wanted to know about all the historical markers you see on your runs, and he’d have been fascinated by the landscape. We lost a parent too young, but we were so lucky to have them in our lives, weren’t we. Thank you!

A 15K to honor your dad sounds like the perfect tribute.

So glad that Bob’s surgery went well earlier this week. I was so sad to see the subways flooded on Thursday/Friday. I know it happens every time there’s a hard rain but it’s so worrisome to see people basically swimming to get down to the platform.

Glad Bob is doing well – what a relief. And a lovely memorial to your dad. I love hearing about his devotion to memorial markers and thought about that when my running friend Trudie was darting over to look at notices pinned to trees and lamp-posts – over the last 15 months I’ve realised she does love a planning application, whereas I’m more about historical markers myself, and also diggers and the like. Hope the weather is more settled for you this week!

What a thoughtful way to honor your dad. I can’t imagine how 15 years have passed. In many ways it still feels like time is crawling since I lost my dad last October.
I saw the subway flooding footage on the national news. Holy cow.
Glad to hear Bob is doing well!

    Glad to hear about Bob.

    OMG that subway pic.

Love to read about your runs…a 15k is the best. He is watching down on you. And smiling! Best daughter ever.

lol. I always stop and read history markers and take pics. But I’m sure you are not surprised about that.

a 15K to honor your dad seems really thoughtful and fitting for you. My sister has been gone 3.5 years and sometimes it feels like yesterday and sometimes it seems like forever ago that I saw her. Anniversaries and holidays are not easy though. hugs to you

Yes, it sounds like it could be the start of half marathon training! Glad you were able to get out there and honor your Dad’s memory.
That book sounds good! I read the description of it on goodreads and am wondering what the “local scandal” was.
Glad you had some nice weather this week!

I love how you were able to honor your father, even if it wasn’t entirely on purpose. Sending love to you.

The flooding was scary looking! I didn’t think you guys would get that much rain, and I can’t believe the flooding happened so fast! No bueno!

The heat has ruined all of my motivation. It’s going to be a long few months for me, for sure!

It’s great you had a meaningful way to honor your Dad. I love learning more about him even though I never got to meet him. I’m always reading historical markers when I can, and was questioning why there are some on the sides of highways — are we supposed to pull over and read them? Look them up on Google?

I know all about the rain you got on Thursday! I just can’t believe I didn’t realize I’d by driving through NYC this weekend. I personally have never driven past Philly until this weekend — only been a passenger.

Its wild that you had so much rain when so much of the country (including my treasured Boundary Waters!) are burning 🙁

Nice tribute to your dad. Always fun to see deer on a run!

I was reading on the fires and thought about some of your camping pics you’d posted, as well as the Nevada Barr book set there. Climate Change is so utterly heartbreaking

What a wonderful honor to your dad to seek out historical markers on the anniversary of his passing and to run a 15k for those 15 years. Some days it seems like my dad died just yesterday and other days it seems like it’s been an eternity. Sending hugs your way.
