USS Intrepid

USS Bataan

Welcome back Fleet Week! New York City isn’t a big military town despite Military Island, but there’s something magical about these giant ships joining Intrepid at the piers. I wasn’t able to make it to the Parade of Ships, but I will one year.  While Bataan is a very different era than Intrepid, nice to see her with fellow ships and not just the giant cruise ships. And if you’ve seen the new Top Gun or are otherwise a fan, look closely at the red on Intrepid’s flight deck. Yep, wrong TomCat, but fun to see this week. Haven’t seen as many sailors as I wasn’t in midtown Thursday or Friday, but the ones I have seen are babies. Clean shaven doesn’t help.

Memorial Day has a whole new meaning given the events in Uvalde, Texas. It is utterly heartbreaking what is happening in this world.  I can’t wrap my head around it in the slightest.  I was actually on a call about how the cultural world could respond to Buffalo when the news of Uvalde broke. There are just no words. It’s a good reminder though to hug your people and love hard. Life is too short.

While I haven’t seen the direct results of inflation in my daily life as much as others since I don’t drive a car, nor do I need to grocery shop as often, I saw it twice this week. Strawberries at $14.99 and feta cheese at $12.99. Luckily I didn’t need either (but still craving spicy feta after a team lunch on Wednesday), but OUCH!

While the general theme seems to be how is it already Memorial Day?, New Years in Rochester seems six years ago not five months. It’s not March 234th like 2020, but timing has been weird this year.

School girl still in attendance, although it’s going to not be denim jacket weather soon

Weekly Run Down with Kim and Deborah:

Thanks, GAP, for indulging my love of colors

Mondays are always good if they start this way

  • never miss a Monday: accidentally continuing on last week’s wasn’t going to run theme, but the weather had broken over night and it was too beautiful not to run by the river. Usually Monday is an office day but I needed to be in midtown on Tuesday and Wednesday so I worked from home, which meant some after work errands. I’d actually bought the dress online but needed to return a pair of white shorts (what was I thinking!) and was thrilled to see this display. It used to be that all the colors were for mostly running, but they’ve definitely expanded into my regular clothes too. Watch out Kim, I might crash your Fashion Flair!

murderous mirror selfies forever

art therapy

  • Tuesday: I was so glad to have an after-hours event at MoMA to escape into after Tuesday’s news because art is such a help. Such a tool. I’m glad we’re seeing an influx of tourists, but it’s always nice to have some one on one time with Starry Night. On a lighter note, found these shoes randomly in my shoe drawer. They’re so comfortable to walk to work and it’s nice to not need to walk in sneakers and carry work shoes.
  • Wednesday: late start so ended up run commuting. On the return run, which included my laptop, I realized it’s not the backpack that’s the issue so much as the laptop even when the backpack is cinched. With later daylight I can commute home and then run so it’s not A Problem so much as a nuisance. Team lunch with the other one we work closely with was good, and not just because there was fire feta.

hiya Fred! Laughing that I raised the non watch hand. Oops!

reflecting on A Week!

  • Thursday: return of Office Run Group with a few extra miles. It was a picture perfect evening and I felt like I could have run forever. I know these will be few and far between in summer weather, so I’m going to take advantage while they last. We did our usual five and I went up to 102 on the bridle path. I got tired around 6.5 but I had to get home. 8.5 was a little ambitious, but a run/walk is fine when it feels good. And it felt perfect.

do I stay or do I go?

  • Friday: thunderbolt and lightning. Very very frightening! hello summer, nice to see you. Got a window between storms after work and sat by the river (easy dash home when the skies broke loose). Riverside reading x3 in one week. Life is good.

wise words on my run

reflections. Definitely a theme

  • Saturday: cloudy with a chance of meatballs, meets Bohemian Rhapsody. Two false starts out the door, but the weather finally cleared in time to run to meet a friend after her matinee show and stayed clear to walk and talk and run home. It would have been a beautiful sunset but my phone was nearly dead and I needed it to use Omni on the bus home, so I couldn’t stay out. I don’t often run the avenues, but the sandwich boards are nice words of wisdom when I do. This was a weird run. ~ 3 miles to Bryant Park which turned on my marathon radar as I ran along the north side of the library to meet Jess, the same spot that Darlene and I queued for the bus. And then later I ran up the west side and all the training memories, including the stairs at 72nd. I can’t believe that was three years ago. I forgot how the West Side has no shade, so that one definitely turned into a walk as there wasn’t much of a breeze, but good to be moving.
  • Sunday: hip is a bit cranky from some strength work and increased mileage/two back to back days so it’s going to be a rest day on a bench with a book. Mental exercise is just as important as physical.

Looking forward to celebrating Global Running Day with many of you on Wednesday. Such a fun “holiday” for all of us.

I like that sign! It’s a good reminder that some little things (dressing up, etc.) can make a big difference in your mood.
I hope to get in a run Wednesday! I’m out of town but hope to make it out.

It really is. So much can depend on a framing.

I’m still reeling from all the recent shootings–I’m glad to hear that it hasn’t just affected me. I told my hubs that I wish I wasn’t so sensitive. I don’t know how these politicians can just ignore it. I agree that the bright colors of all the clothes are so refreshing! We need something to pick us up.

I’m listening to thunder as we speak. Will we get it? Or will it bypass us, lol

I don’t think any of us is truly immune. Impossible. But like Kim I’m worried I’m becoming complacent. Ones with kids will always get me but I almost missed Tulsa.

You know I love me some reflection photos!

$14.99 for strawberries? My God. I bought some this week I think they were organic & like $5.99/lb. But the pain at the pump is totally real, especially when you’re putting piles of miles on your car.

It would have been great running weather in ME, but I was happy with the other types of exploring we did.

Wow I thought my strawberries at 7.99 this time of the year were expensive! Yes, the last few weeks have been so upsetting and hard to process. It was nice to have the opportunity to escape it all for a while. Hope you had a fun long weekend

You weren’t going to run theme is like I wasn’t going to sign up for another race.

Yes, art therapy as is running. Glad she share both.

Loved seeing your art therapy pics on FB. I haven’t been to MoMa in ~5 years I bet.

I am very aware of grocery prices and have a new “horror story” every week. My 3.99 4-packs of Chobani are now $5.19. The cherry tomatoes labeled for $3.99 rang up at $4.39. (I can get the old price this time, but they will fix the sign by next week). At least strawberries are “only” $4 a pint at the farmer’s market. (They are actually cheaper at the grocery store, but shipped in from CA versus driven up from NC.)

I think $14.99 are a NYC thing! Ours are expensive, but nowhere near that. Filling up the gas tank is painful though- luckily I don’t have to drive far to work.
You had a full week as usual! Glad you were able to have some art therapy. And I love that sign. Ah, NY is such a fascinating place- in spite of the expensive strawberries.

I totally forgot about Fleet Week!

Wow – those inflation numbers are crazy. I have seen inflation at the grocery store but nothing that crazy! We’re still paying $4.50+ a gallon for gas here so I’m happy that I don’t drive a lot because that would be a huge expense.

Between the events in Buffalo and Texas, I just feel really lost. Not sure how anything I can do will help but I’m willing to try.

What, $14.99 for strawberries? Yikes!! I’m impatiently waiting for my EV to come in. We ordered it back in December, but there were parts for the car which were affected by the Ukraine invasion so I have no idea when I am supposed to get it now. It would be perfect timing for it!
As for the horrible events this week – I just can’t understand what is wrong with people. It’s just so sad.

I noticed yesterday that the strawberry prices actually came down due to them being “in season” now. Thank heavens. Our grocery bill has easily doubled though. Love the pink dress and all of your beautiful pictures! Enjoy this long weekend!

You look gorgeous in that pink dress.

I’m glad you were able to lose yourself in art. Ii’ve been trying to keep busy, but we have had so much awfulness here this week. Our school board elections are coming up and it is flat out dangerous for the candidates. I just don’t understand how violent and hostile people have become. It breaks my heart.

Good grief those are some pricey strawberries!

These past few weeks have been so hard. I feel so drained. It’s nice to get lost in art for a bit.

Looking for to celebrating Global Running Day together.

Loved seeing the ships and glad you got some art therapy. Our museum and art gallery has finally partly reopened and I’m going to get there soon.
