Virtual Races and Running Clothes

By | October 25, 2020

I have not been into the virtual runs. I love running some of your favorites, but couldn’t get into paying to run my usual routes. I knew though there was one I’d do. The Ted Corbitt is my favorite race along with the Frozen Penguin, and I absolutely love the 15K/10 mile distance. So once NYRR announced it would go forward virtually, I knew I was in.

While the holidays may look different this year, our shared joy of running can make this a bright time and bring us together, even if we have to stay apart. Let’s celebrate the ways that members of our running community have helped one another and inspired others all year long.

I had no plans on a 5K. I don’t love the 5K on a good day, but how could I resist that messaging? So I’m doing the Season of Light 5K.

Anyone want to join me for either/both? No swag, but totally free.

I finally pulled out the NoxGear vest, although I only wore it once as I’ve been mostly running in pedestrian zones, but it is time to start to think about how to glow in the dark. On cue, Runner Beans published a list of best reflective gear for runners. I’m excited also to wear a pair of the reflective moonshine capris I bought when Skirt was closing down.

Related to merchandise, loving Dirty Old Sneakers’ collection, especially the NYC marathon transportation one. I need nothing but…

Managed to actually post twice this week! Active Leafcation!

Weekly run down with Kim and Deborah:

  • never miss a Monday: had an 8am dentist appointment. I didn’t run there the last visit as I was worried about a July run and what the thermometer would register on arrival. Monday was much cooler (although humid) and I had a beautiful run to and from the dentist. The fogging was absolutely bonkers with mask (midtown, so no option not to) and humidity.
  • Tuesday: one of those days where I was on Zoom until 8pm. I really, really need to get back in the habit of the morning walks especially on those days. Speaking of zoom-like things, I’m officially a Zooma Ambassador and can’t wait to hopefully run Cape Cod or Amelia Island next year.
  • Wednesday: woke at 4 AM and couldn’t get back to sleep. Too dark to run that early and somehow I still didn’t get out on time to get five miles, but a nice 4+ shakeout to start the day is always a good thing.
  • Thursday: office run group is a lovely thing to look forward to. A dose of normalcy in these upside down times, and great to semi-regularly see a colleague. This week featured a side of Halloween, which somehow snuck up on me this year.

  • Friday: new phone, who ‘dis? I am not a buy a new phone on the day of presale. But my phone left me no choice. iSmash. Upgrade at the Apple store was easy and I was soon on my way to AMNH for the mandatory first photos on my new phone. That has been A Thing since my first “Camera phone” and I’m so glad the museums were open again for my ridiculosity.

hi friend!

  • Saturday: literally running errands. Had to return something at the GAP Factory store and the easiest way to get there is to run. I turned it into a longer run via St. John the Divine’s public art and some other sightseeing and it was nice to see a different route, although ~ 4 miles were some of the usual CP haunts.

all hail the bubble man

  • Sunday: a nice walk through the Park, a good book. Lazy lazy Sunday aka why this is just getting posted now.

I already had registered for all the NYRR virtual races. I have a Strava acct but never use it. So they may not get done.

I hope to run Cape Cod too.

Keep sharing your nyc pics. Love them.

I don’t think you actually need to use Strava for the NYRR ones. I just plan to have run with the hashtag and for Ted, run the pre-2019 (construction) course as it’s a fun 9 miler.
New phone, twist my arm on pics :p

Agree, there are some races that I will always register for, even in their virtual editions – the two big marathons in my area, my favorite 5k, and a 10k that my work sponsors. I feel like sunrise went from 7:30 to 8 this past week, it’s just ridiculously dark in the mornings. Luckily as long as I start by 8 I can get my run done, but I am looking forward to the time change to buy me a few more weeks of outdoor running.

We had the fog that Coco did this week so even though the sun rose, it felt as if it didn’t. 8 cuts it too close for me, but I can make 7:30 work. Hoping to get out sooner tomorrow though for some rain running. I agree too re: time change. Although this week’s sunrise might work well.

Congrats on being a A Zoom ambassador! They do have great races and Amelia Island is on my bucket list whenever we can go and maybe Cape Cod. I am still a little scared to go to the dentist 🙂 I just signed up for a virtual Turkey trot 10K but that’s all I have right now.

Congrats on the Zooma ambassadorship! That seems like a perfect fit for you 😉 I have a dentist appointment Wednesday morning (before work), so I’ll be driving LOL

I was wondering if NYRR and NYCRUNS would keep offering virtual runs through the end of the year, so that’s good to know!

Congrats on the Zooma ambassadorship! Hopefully next year I’ll be able to do a Zooma race in person and we can meet up!

Congrats on your ambassadorship! Oh yes to Amelia Island. I would like to go there too.

I’ve been to the dentist once since this all began and it was fine. I felt comfortable going.

I have a reflective vest that I used to wear a lot in previous years. Now I usually wait till it isn’t dark anymore to start running. One of the benefits of working from home.

Sounds like a great week. I used to use an ipod touch for the camera, and an android. Eventually even Mr. Judy figured that was nuts so I got my first (refurbished, older) iphone. I also don’t change phones all that often. I try not to anyway!

So many Halloween decorations here. 🙂

I just bought the Noxgear vest, after my headlamp debaucle! I hate running in the dark, but work mornings leave me no choice. Sigh.

Anxious to hear how you like the new iphone. I have the 10 but my screen is cracked. I should just get the screen fixed, right? LOL

Who’s this bubble man? how cool!
I had to buy a new iphone too 🙁 So expensive!
I have a Noxgear vest- I don’t always wear it only b/c it doesn’t do much to allow ME to see (like my headlamp) but I do love the way they look when a few of us wear them in the dark! Like a fun dance club but in running form!

Yes, totally an 80s dance club. I use it to be visible for the cyclists I share the path with. Cars aren’t too much of an issue as I run on the sidewalks to and from the parks. But yes, I don’t run on an unven path before or after dark for that reason, doesn’t help with my visibility.
Luckily my apple card allows for installments as I bought a new computer this summer. Was not planning on the phone so soon after
This isn’t the official CP Bubble Man, but one of the clones. They’re always so fun to see

I might just join you for the Season of Light 5K (the 15K is too long for me as I’m recovering). If all goes as planned, the Santa 5K will be my one-and-only live race this year (it’s one the 6th). I’ll have to do your race early, though, as I’m having another BCC removed from my leg on the 7th and won’t be able to run for a week or two.

Hope you’re having a great week!

      YAY!
Let’s touch base closer to and we’ll figure out how to run “together” or coordinate high fives or something . Hope the BCC removal goes well – reminder I still need to reschedule my thrice canceled dermatologist appointment.

Yay for dino! I have done four charity virtual races, none of which I would have done in real life, I did a virtual Birmingham 10k I’ve done in real life once or twice and did a not the not the Birmingham Half, doing our own half route as the club one was too weird. I have more reflective and flouro kit now I’m running more frequently.

The only thing that would have made the dino better was if Dippy was having a trans-atlantic tour. I have only one true flouro – well same shirt in long and short sleeves. I need to fix that.
