well behaved women seldom make history

By | March 14, 2021

So many strong women on my mind this week. Friends, family, icons.  So much has been done, yet so much remains.

guilty!

I had such fun reading this Run to the Finish post as I wrap my head around how Apple Watch data differs from Garmin’s. I have the added layer of different because I never wore my Garmin all day and the old Fitbit model I had didn’t track heart rate and such.

hah!

This was my favorite amusement as I wasn’t remotely working out, but rather going to pick up dinner on Thursday night. I guess we do walk quickly here. So far it’s a fun toy and less aggravating than Garmin even when I accidentally lost the first half of my run Saturday.

on milestones

this is the new me, thanks Peloton

Darlene raised some good points on why Peloton isn’t for her. I think this is the biggest thing it has delivered for me so far. I said in January that I wanted to start strength training, and Peloton has helped me achieve that goal. Biggest credit is really to Matty’s challenges because it’s accountability. It’s a free challenge, but I said I was going to do it and there’s a group of people I can see daily in the workouts, plus it’s fun to check in on what people thought about the workouts. Can I eventually transition to the free YouTube videos? Sure, I already incorporate Marcia’s amazing videos, but for me I need the crutch in building the habit.

The other workouts really do tell a story too. I prefer podcasts or straight music for walking, I don’t have an interest in coached power walk, although that might be different if I were using a treadmill. Although I have learned a few moves, I will probably never be a yoga person. As I come up on a year of shutting down running due to the lingering IT Band, I’m impressed at how many stretching classes Peloton offers so I have some variety there that will keep me in good habits. Had some ankle stiffness likely due to too much sedentary time while quarantining, and the active recovery for my feet was just perfect.

My goal this week was to do mostly women coaches for my runs since I’m still doing Matty’s strength classes. Luckily the library of classes to choose from is seemingly never-ending.

Weekly Run Down with Deborah and the birthday girl Kim:

Zooma International Women’s Day

  • never miss a Monday: a fast, sunny, brisk morning with amazing Peloton soundtrack: Selena Country Women’s Playlist and Rebecca Kennedy’s 80s. Reba! Dolly! Madonna! Can’t not speed up to that, and it was so much fun to run with Liz and Darlene. May this be a pandemic tradition that continues.
  • Terrific Tuesday: an absolutely gorgeous day that began and ended in Central Park with two walks. Originally thought I couldn’t fully do Kim’s Pi challenge because I’m not a streaker, but instead turned it into a run/walk streak and was glad to have it to push myself to walk just a little further on days off.
  • Wednesday: happy hump day. Sunny, no hat, one shirt. Hello fake spring, I love you.

#Twinning

  • Thursday: another absolutely gorgeous day and couldn’t resist twinning with Eat Pretty’s mascot at the end of my run. If we can’t have some silliness in our lives, are we really living?

never ever more true

  • Friday: the best day of all this week, weather wise and was able to meet a friend after work for a walk and talk around Central Park. For the first time in months, being outside was about the beautiful weather and not (just) Covid safety. On the one year anniversary of working from home, it was nice to have this day of in person human connection. It was also the fourth anniversary of my turning into a Frozen Penguin. Crazy how much March weather can swing.

hello North Woods

  • Saturday: there were all sorts of plans for this run, but I struggled to get out the door.  Eventually headed to Central Park to do however long I felt like for the No More Week 5K and on 102, felt myself pulled north. While NoMore targets domestic violence, this area has always been poignant. 30 years ago it wouldn’t have been safe to run (or walk, or be) there solo and it’s amazing to see the work that has been done not only by the Central Park Conservancy, but the city broadly to reclaim the park. While Randalls Island would have been a fun run, Central Park was clearly where I needed to be for this 6.5 ish miles.
  • Sunday: running back to back days to give Kim some birthday pi(e) and enjoy one last warm-ish day before March comes back.

But is it false spring? While we’re supposed to get snow tomorrow, it won’t last and to me, that’s part of spring, at least here in the Midwest. My daffodils are popping up, so I’m calling it spring, lol

I’m glad the Peloton app is working well for you. I’m not an indoor cycler and I don’t need coached runs, so…I did try it in the beginning of the pandemic when it was free. The treadmill runs were definitely something I liked (and would need!).

It’s bonkers. We’ve had snow in March but don’t usually carom between extremes like we did this week.
I think the various free trials probably converted more than enough folks for it to have been worth it for them, but it isn’t for everyone

Yes. Yes. Let’s continue our virtual runs.

I do agree about strength training. If only I could motivate myself to do any.

Crazy weather. Spring winter spring winter.

But I’m enjoying the sunshine today. I’m happy.

Honestly for me I just made it part of my daily habit like PT was. Particular days need motivation not to curl up with a book, but overall it just feels like something I do if that makes sense. Sunshine is always good!

If fake spring would hang around just one more week until real spring gets here, I’d be ever so delighted. I’ll get around to trying the Peloton app one of these days…maybe….haha!

yeah you sent us your crazy wind yesterday. We went from high 20s to 60s today. Nuts. But I’ll take the better weekend weather

Glad you are liking the Peloton classes and that they’ve helped you stick to your strength training. They’re not for everyone, but it seems like alot of people love them. I hope this weather continues but I’m expecting it to get colder again before it warms up for good!

Yep. Trying to find hope that this warming is real, but March is finicky creature

Look at you hitting those strength milestones! Keep up the stretching. Like you, I enjoy the habit and the variety of all that Peloton has to offer. Hope you have another strong week ahead!

yes, I keep finding new and new to me classes, which makes it fun. I’m obsessed with Matty’s hip 5m one with frog. That’s just so perfect. Thank you (again) for telling me about it

I loved running “with” you on Monday and the clever photo! And a good week for you. I like the stretching classes on Peleton too. OK, I’ve watched a few to review them and haven’t done them, so that’s the aim this week …

Yeah they definitely take some practice, but there are some “poses” I’ve come to love

Interesting perspective on Peloton. I have only tried a few classes with my sister and I wasn’t sold, but definitely understand the accountability benefit! That’s huge.

Sounds like a lovely week with lots of outdoor time!

Since you have your Discover Strength classes I can see why you might not find it as necessary. Definite upside to all the choices is there’s likely something for everyone based on skill/interest/etc.

Congrats on hitting 50 strength workouts with Peloton, thats awesome! I think the most important thing about the app is finding the best way to use it that works for you and your schedule and it looks like you have.

The Garmin meme is so funny. I use my Apple watch now for my runs but I used to laugh at my Garmin watch when it would tell me that , especially when I knew I wasn’t “unproductive”.

Yep, I think Garmin is a big bully!
Totally re: routine. It took me until about halfway through Matty’s February challenge to realize I needed to do it warmed up as it would be much less evil. Ideally I’d be awake early enough to run and class in the morning, but that hasn’t worked out yet. One day!

Of course! I’m always going to run “with” friends when possible.

Have often run mid March races with still lots of snow on the ground, so very happy the snow is gone.

Everyone has their own thing. I don’t think I’d use Peloton if it weren’t for the stationary bike & the treadmill. I did hop on the bike briefly today just to keep my Peloton “streak” going (not days, just weeks, in fact probably one day a week lately.

I haven’t managed to meet up with the friends I’ve been meeting up with in a while, and I’m definitely missing that!

That makes total sense as you have your existing routines for stretching and yoga.
I like it for music on the runs, but I entirely ignore the training aspects of it other than pace pickups if it makes sense where I’m running.

Well done on all of those strength classes! I’ve been doing more of the stretch classes and enjoying them too. With Peloton, like most things, everyone needs to find what works for them, right?

Always nice to be able to catch up with a friend – I did the same on Friday and it was the best!

    Have a great week!

Yay for spring weather! Hey, if you power walk to get your dinner, of course that counts as exercise! So glad you are enjoying the strength and stretching classes on Peloton. What matters is that you found a platform that motivates you/works for you. I am so lost on YouTube, and love being able to quickly find a workout that matches what I’m in the mood for and have time for. I still wish there were more filters, but then I’d spend even more time deciding. 😉

It’s still a bit chilly where I live, but as long as there’s no ice on the ground, I’m calling it real spring! I had a lot of fun crashing Kim’s pi party for the 2nd year in a row.

I’m pretty sure that I unofficially completed the #WeekOfPi, too! I didn’t hop on board because I was nervous about the daily distance, but the more the merrier, right?

I am so glad you are loving your apple watch! I love new gadgets, and am still debating getting one. My birthday is coming… although I also want obedience lessons for Luna, so…

I’m so glad you are able to run safely. Any time we are in NYC, K gets anxious about me running alone, but I don’t feel unsafe when there are so many people around.

Glad Peloton is working out for you! I meant to start Matty’s core program on the 1st. I forgot so I started on the 2nd. I got my vaccine that day and the next day felt horrible and did not continue. I am sure I can start again.

I think I have mentioned this but I’ve been to NYC a few time but have never run there. I’ve never even been to Central Park!

I love fake spring. I just wish it would last longer! but then I guess that might be “real” spring? haha!!

I use Les Mills on Demand and love the variety there as well. Though it’s not like Peloton; it doesn’t tally up what you’ve done and I know numbers can motivate people so that’s definitely a plus of Peloton. I also have a coach that makes workout plans for me (this is a new thing until I get the habit going – then hopefully I can carry it on myself with LMOD) and that’s going well. So I really understand needing a bit of a crutch.
