We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces!

Edit: this post was half written, and then we lost a dear colleague to COVID19 and I deleted a lot as it became irrelevant. Pardon the random collection of what’s left.

I’m OK, just sad. He was an amazing man. Here are some photos another colleague shared.  We don’t know when we’ll be back in the office, and I can’t imagine that day without him stopping at my desk to scope out the candy dish and I feel like this is going to be unsettled until then. The issues with CV19 are many, but among the top is we lose our ability to come together amid crises. It’s testament though to how loved he was that the GoFundMe to bury him and support his family was fully funded in about 36 hours.

This is one of the pieces I’m struggling with on work from home. I miss my colleagues. We have phone calls, Slack calls, Zoom calls, but sometimes it was just easier to pop over to someone’s desk and storm the brains.

I’m grateful for Facetime with the minions in my life for smiles. Running? Running is just for running. I do want to do the Cherry Blossom Virtual 10 miler, maybe, but otherwise there are no distances on my program. I’m running when and for how long I want to.

On other notes, I was glad to see the Little Free Library between my apartment and the coffee shop restocked. It had been bare of late and I wondered if its curator was taking the books inside for safekeeping when I left one and saw it immediately gone. He restocked it last  weekend and I was happy to continue my take one, leave one policy even if I’m not reading much of late.

  • rewind to pick up last week’s unfinished Sunday business. Got out the door for a quick out and back of two ish miles. I realized that while I don’t have enough Simon & Garfunkel on my playlist, it’s usually on the mental playlist. I was almost in tears seeing grandma’s name. It’s not near her bday or passing anniversary, but emotions are weird.
  • missed this Monday: because I ran three days in a row. Was almost wishing I hadn’t when I walk/swam to Target to get some basic essentials to adulting. It’s funny, the things you can live without (Brita filter, pyrex bowl) until you’re home full time, Got the PT space up and running ish and got in a set for the second day in a row.

  • Tuesday: crisp, beautiful spring day and after work I went avoiding people and hunting cherry blossoms. Cherry Hill still bare, but the Park was gorgeous for a 4+ mile wiggle.
  • Wednesday: short after work walk to drop off some items to a friend who isn’t able to go out. Also put together my new chair and laptop riser, which have made a huge difference toward physical comfort while WFH

  • Thursday: who says “long” runs and selfails are for weekends only? Darlene, Elizabeth and I were texting about a simultaneous virtual run and matching, so I tried to take a pic. Otherwise I just ran and took in the evening light. I’ve run a lot more on the East Side of late – not for fear of CP crowds but just because it’s more convenient. I love living so close to the water.

  • Friday: water is therapeutic. This walk wasn’t even long enough to count for #19for19challenge, but I headed here after work to think about Rally. This end of the park is always quieter as there are no benches, and the only living thing to get within six feet was a dog who was quite confused by a human at his height. NYC gets a reputation as a concrete jungle – although having lived there too, Osaka is way worse! – and I suppose there is some humor in calling pavement a park. But it’s a great oasis over the highway and a great place to read. Yes, this is the home of most of my runrise runs.

  • Saturday: there were some vague plans to go out early and beat the crowds, rain and do ten for the virtual cherry blossoms since ours will be mostly gone by next week, but I wasn’t feeling it. I did want to get some outside activity before a weekend full of rain, so I got in a couple of pink miles. I had some necessary shopping to do, so I took care of that later and then settled in on the couch to finally finish John Grisham’s The Guardians.
  • Sunday: get out of my PJs, eventually. Cook lunch for the week (yes, for the third week in a row!). Maybe finally switch my closet, although today feels too raw.

Food, medicine and exercise

I won’t lie. I’m selfishly glad that the New York lockdown specifically permits exercise.  I think we all need it to stay healthy, and solo running is no different to other necessary activities. I’m oh so grateful I found running three years ago so I have an outlet.

Mom dug this out while looking through some of grandma’s old photos. If there were any questions as to whether I was an 80s child, that decor settles it.

One odd thing I noticed about my personal eating habits this week. Normally at the weekend when I sit with my coffee at my laptop, I find myself grazing on cheerios. This week, when I’ve made a concerted effort to go out and get coffee (7/11’s creamer is better), I don’t have the mindless munchy hunger and can make it until a proper lunch. Conclusion: bodies are weird.

  • never miss a Monday: I woke in the morning and it was too dark and cold, so I punted my run until after work. Unclear which is going to be better for me so long as work from home lasts, so I’m going to play it by ear. This run felt good. It was brisk out with the wind blowing the storm in. But I’m happy with four miles aka the really long way to a Walgreens four blocks away. I maybe could have gotten in six if I’d left a little earlier, but four > none.

  • Tuesday: really, really working on that PT space, which I’ve talked about for weeks. It’s crucial since the gym closed. I have most of what I need to do at home, save for a wall.  Deborah’s stability ball post reminded me I need to get one as there’s a lot I can do even without the wall. I’m still trying not to run two days in a row, so today’s “exercise” was walking to get coffee and my lunch. Grateful for my MealPal subscription’s two remaining meals to give me some lunch variety until my Peapod delivery came. Got in a walk to a colleague’s apartment for some sanity.

  • Wednesday plan was a morning run, but this being able to sleep in a little has been nice and with no event conflicts after work, it has been hard to get up early to run. Luckily I finished work in time to get in a pre-dark run in Central Park. Selfies still doable with social distancing!

  • Thursday: Target run after work for a pyrex bowl for the cooking that is happening.  Yes, I lack basics. Even though those in-block signs are super common, this pairing just made me laugh. Pizza is prehab, right?

  • Friday: 70s.  Chance of rain after work so I got out early in the fog for my new favorite four mile loop. It wasn’t crowded at all, with Mother Nature enforcing some social distancing between the island. The rain held out and I got in a walk after work too.

  • Saturday: temperatures returned to normal March, which meant I could run to meet a friend for a socially distanced walk through the flowers (Facebook, Instagram). Yes, I took too many pictures, but the flowers are so comforting. We remember running through the cherry blossoms and figure this is around our meetup anniversary, which made the catch up even better. Central Park is truly the best place for self care and social distancing. Rest of the day was spent trying to knock the apartment into shape for continued WFH and PT. I really, really want to reclaim my futon for fun vs. work, so we’ll see how that goes. I really want to read over this hibernation, and that’s not going to happen if futon is also a desk.

  • Sunday: working from a desk! Well blogging, not actual work at my laptop. It’s not perfect, and I need to find a riser and a chair, but it works. I love apartment life, and have frequently wondered why I’d move – I don’t need more space, but it’s not generally for full time living. Not to worry, I do have a suburban escape if I need it. Continued cleaning, purging and hopefully a run. Normally I’d never run three days in a row, but yesterday’s was only a mile and a half to meet my friend, so that was kind of a rest day. We’ll see when I get out.

What a week

like all of us, Coronavirus dominated my world. Not to say it’s anything like Hiroshima, but the blossoms there always reminded me of resiliency, and them blooming here this week gives me hope.

Lots to say, but nothing to add to the conversation beyond: Stay safe everyone. And for those of you newly working from home, Liz has some great advice and wardrobe suggestions.

As I wrote some of this on Friday night I had to look at Strava because I had no recollection of workouts.  Not that I was doing any specific workouts as I recovered from my knee anyway, but running now is just a little bit of therapy amid the uncertain world.

Weekly Run Down with birthday girl Kim and Deborah:

  • Monday: knew in advance this Monday would be missed. Was at the opening of Edge, NYC’s newest observation deck. As Darlene can attest from our lighthouse escapades in Bermuda, I don’t do heights well so I didn’t fully explore it to its maximum capacity. It was a stunning view though.
  • Tuesday:  reality hit that the week was going to be a doozy. Luckily I packed my light vest and was able to run commute home. Short is better than nothing. Apparently I had a walk too, which I literally did not remember until I looked at instagram.
  • Wednesday: fitting that on the last “normal” day, I crammed in a press preview for Asia Week and the Brooklyn Museum’s amazing Studio 54 exhibit.
  • Thursday: happy third raceversary to me! Day was anything but “happy” as Coronavirus came to play in New York City. But this is a resilient city.
  • Friday: plan was to run before I worked from home, but I woke to driving ran. It eased by 8:30 giving me time to go on a literal coffee run before work. Ended up longer than planned as first 7/11 had only boring creamer, which was my reason for buying coffee. After a long work day I hit Central Park for some much needed zen. Tried to find the beauty in the early spring blooms.

  • Saturday: a beautiful day. A friend and I who I’d spent time with all week decided if one of us was exposed we’d already exposed the other and the risk of a walk in the park was worth it. With such a huge space, Central Park is probably one of the easiest places for New Yorkers to social distance. Crocuses and cherry blossoms at the same time is so weird, but then again this was a bizarre winter. Side note: I really, really love that run commute backpack. Not just for its intended purchase, but also helpful for stashing stuff for errands and gym visit after. Alas, toilet paper didn’t fit and I still needed to buy a bag.
  • Sunday: continuing the apartment organizing to better work from home. Hi, early spring cleaning. Maybe gym for the PT exercises I can’t do at home. Maybe walk.

Plan for the week: who knows. Trying to run before work three/four days to keep off the stir crazy.
